The Unofficial American Holiday
Super Bowl Sunday is the one day when everyone watches the same thing at the same time. Even if you don't care about football, you probably end up at a party watching the commercials and halftime show. It's a shared cultural moment.
I use this countdown to plan my watch party. Good Super Bowl parties take some prep - the food, the setup, making sure the TV actually works before kickoff. Nothing worse than technical difficulties when everyone shows up.
Watch Party Planning
My party checklist based on years of hosting:
Send invites, ask for headcount. People need time to plan. Set up the betting pool or squares if you do that.
Test your TV setup. Seriously. HDMI issues at kickoff are the worst. Plan your menu, assign who brings what.
Buy non-perishables, beer, ice. Order wings if you're not making them - places sell out.
Prep everything before noon. Chill drinks, arrange seating, set out plates. Kickoff is usually ~6:30pm ET.
Essential Super Bowl Food
🍗 Wings
Non-negotiable. Buffalo, BBQ, or both. Order ahead or prepare the night before. Way more wings get eaten than you expect.
🫕 Dips
Queso, guac, spinach artichoke, 7-layer. Chips and dip are the backbone of Super Bowl snacking. Make at least two kinds.
🌭 Sliders & Pigs in Blanket
Easy finger food that's filling. People graze for 4+ hours. You need substantial food, not just chips.
🍺 Drinks
Beer, obviously. But also non-alcoholic options and water. Long game = pace yourself situation. Get more ice than you think you need.

- •Second-biggest eating day after Thanksgiving. Pizza orders go up 35% on Super Bowl Sunday.
- •Monday should be a holiday - there's a petition every year. Productivity definitely drops the Monday after.
