The Season We Wait All Year For
Summer is the main event. It's what you're working toward through the dark winter months and the tease of spring. When that June 21 solstice hits, it's officially time for vacations, long evenings, and that specific summer energy.
This countdown exists because summer planning starts early. You don't want to be the person booking flights in May and paying double. The countdown is a reminder to get ahead of it.
Summer Planning Timeline
My approach to not scrambling at the last minute:
Book flights and accommodations. Summer prices spike fast. Early bird always wins.
Book activities that require reservations - tours, restaurants, camping spots in popular parks.
Summer gear check - sunscreen, beach stuff, outdoor equipment. Replace what's worn out.
Appreciate the longest day. Go outside. Stay up late. Soak it in.
Summer Activity Ideas
ποΈ Beach & Water
Beach days, lake swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding. Something about being near water makes everything feel more like vacation.
ποΈ Camping
Best camping weather of the year. No freezing nights, no bugs... okay, some bugs. But warm nights around a campfire are worth it.
π΄ Travel
Kids out of school means family trips are possible. Europe, road trips, national parks. Summer is when the world travels.
π Grilling Season
Fire up the grill and don't turn on the oven until September. Backyard BBQs, cookouts, eating outside. Simple pleasures.
Summer Solstice Facts
- β’Longest day of the year - in most of the US, you get 14-16 hours of daylight. Above the Arctic Circle: 24 hours of sun.
- β’Not the hottest day - despite maximum sunlight, peak heat comes weeks later. The oceans and land are still warming up.
- β’Stonehenge alignment - the ancient stones are positioned so the sun rises exactly over the Heel Stone on the solstice. Thousands gather to watch.
- β’Midsummer celebrations - in Scandinavia, the summer solstice is a major holiday. Dancing, bonfires, and a lot of staying up all night.
