Countdown to Spring

How many days until winter ends?

March 20 - the spring equinox brings warmer days.

The Light at the End of Winter

February is the worst. Dark at 5pm. Cold that gets into your bones. Grey everything. By mid-February I'm checking this countdown daily like a prisoner counting days. Dramatic? Maybe. But winter does that to you.

March 20ish - that's the magic date. Spring equinox. Still cold, probably, but the days officially start winning against the nights. And somehow that changes everything mentally. Light at the end of the tunnel, literally.

Spring Prep Checklist

Things I start doing as the countdown gets closer:

6 WEEKS

Start seeds indoors if you garden. Order summer sports equipment. Begin spring cleaning, one room at a time.

4 WEEKS

Service the lawn mower, check garden tools. Schedule AC maintenance. Rotate winter clothes to the back.

2 WEEKS

Clean windows (amazing how much light this adds). Prep outdoor furniture. Plan Easter if you celebrate.

DAY OF

Go outside. Walk without a heavy coat. Notice the birds. Breathe. Winter is officially over.

Things to Look Forward To

🌷 Flowers Coming Back

Crocuses first, then daffodils, tulips, cherry blossoms. After months of brown, that first splash of color hits different.

🌤️ More Daylight

Days finally getting longer. Finishing work when it's still light out. Evening walks become possible again.

🚴 Outdoor Activities

Running without layers. Biking without frozen fingers. Golf courses opening. Tennis courts drying out. The world opens up.

🪟 Open Windows

That first day when you can open the windows and air out the house. Fresh air after months of sealed-up heating. Simple but underrated.

Quick Facts

  • Equal day and night - that's what "equinox" means (from Latin). The sun sits right over the equator.
  • March 19-21 range - the exact date varies slightly each year due to Earth's orbit. Usually March 20.
  • Ancient celebrations - many cultures have spring festivals. Nowruz (Persian New Year), Holi, Easter. The theme is always rebirth.
  • It's fall somewhere - in the Southern Hemisphere, the March equinox marks the start of autumn. Everything's reversed.
