Easter Countdown 2027: When Is Easter Sunday?
Easter moves around the calendar each year, but planning ahead makes it special.
When Is Easter 2027?
Easter Sunday 2027 falls on March 28th. Unlike fixed holidays, Easter's date changes every year based on an ancient calculation involving the moon and the spring equinox.
I find it fascinating that a religious holiday uses astronomical calculations dating back centuries. The rule is simple: Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox (March 21st).
How Is the Easter Date Calculated?
The calculation, called the Computus, was established in 325 AD at the Council of Nicaea. Here's how it works:
Step 1: Spring Equinox
The church fixes March 21st as the ecclesiastical spring equinox.
Step 2: Paschal Full Moon
Find the first full moon on or after March 21st (the "Paschal Moon").
Step 3: Easter Sunday
Easter is the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon.
This means Easter can fall anywhere between March 22nd and April 25th.
Easter Traditions Around the World
Egg Hunts (USA/UK)
Children search for hidden eggs in gardens and parks. Perfect for a timed challenge!
Easter Fires (Germany)
Large bonfires are lit on Easter Saturday to symbolize the end of winter and new beginnings.
Egg Rolling (UK)
Decorated hard-boiled eggs are rolled down hills. The egg that travels farthest without breaking wins.
Easter Witch (Finland)
Children dress as Easter witches and go door to door exchanging willow twigs for treats.
Planning Your Easter Celebration
Using a countdown timer helps organize Easter activities:
- Egg hunt timing - Set a 15-minute timer for each age group
- Cooking coordination - Time roast lamb or ham to finish together
- Egg decorating contests - Give everyone 30 minutes to create
- Family games - Time rounds for egg-and-spoon races
