How to Use an Online Alarm Clock
Why I built this (and when I actually use it).
I built the online alarm because I kept forgetting about the rice cooker. I'd start cooking, go back to work on my laptop, and burn dinner. Setting an alarm on my phone meant unlocking it, opening the app, dealing with notifications...
An alarm in my browser tab is faster. Set the time, keep the tab open, work until it goes off. My computer speakers are loud enough to hear across the apartment. Problem solved.
When I Actually Use It
Cooking (Most Common)
Rice, pasta, anything in the oven. Set it and forget it. My computer speakers are much louder than my phone across the apartment.
Power Naps
20 minutes on the couch, laptop on the table. I don't have to fumble with my phone when I'm already half asleep.
Meeting Backup
When calendar notifications are unreliable. A browser alarm 5 minutes before the call has saved me more than once.
Laundry
45-minute alarm to switch the wash. Otherwise I forget and it sits there getting musty.
Hotel Rooms
I never trust hotel alarm clocks. Laptop alarm as backup for early flights. It works offline once loaded.
How to Set an Online Alarm
Choose the Time
Set the exact time you want the alarm to go off. Use AM/PM or 24-hour format.
Select a Sound
Pick an alarm sound that will wake you. Test it first to make sure volume is right.
Keep the Tab Open
The alarm only works while the browser tab is open. Don't close it or shut down your computer.
Turn Up Volume
Make sure your computer speakers are on and volume is high enough to hear.
Tips for Reliable Alarms
Prevent Sleep Mode
Adjust power settings so your computer doesn't sleep before the alarm. The alarm won't sound if the computer sleeps.
Test First
Set a test alarm for 1 minute from now. Confirm sound works and volume is appropriate.
Use as Backup
For critical wake-ups, use alongside your phone alarm. Two alarms are better than one.
Check Time Zone
Online alarms use your computer's time. Make sure your system clock is correct, especially when traveling.

Common Issues
Alarm didn't sound?
Check: Was the tab closed? Did computer sleep? Was volume muted? Did browser block autoplay? Test again with a 1-minute alarm.
Sound is quiet?
Check system volume, browser tab volume, and speaker volume. Some browsers have per-tab volume controls.
Wrong time?
The alarm uses your computer's time. Check your system clock settings, especially timezone and daylight saving time.
Give It a Try
Set an alarm for 1 minute from now to test it. Make sure your volume is up. Then you'll know it works when you actually need it.
